The name sums it up: the European Energy Trophy is all about saving energy. Those who use energy resources responsibly reduce CO2 emissions and, in addition, save money. This approach has been adopted by around 150 companies in the EU who, once again, have committed themselves to reducing their energy consumption in office complexes.

For a period of one year, participants allowed technical monitoring of their electricity and heating consumption and a jury evaluated the results.
The primary objective of the competition is to achieve energy savings by raising the awareness of employees and encouraging environmentally friendly behavior. Technical improvements are an additional factor but not the most important one.

One of the competitors was the Dresdner Bank. As prescribed in the competition rules, the company launched an internal campaign to increase its employees’ awareness of the connection between energy and CO2 emissions.

With Dussmann Service at its side as technical service provider, the Dresdner Bank was able to show, in addition to its employee campaign, that it had also introduced several technical improvements to decrease energy consumption. For example, conventional lighting was replaced by LED lighting in lifts reducing energy consumption by around 90 percent. Additional benefit: LED lighting lasts 10 times longer. Ventilation systems were operated only when really needed, i.e. they were adapted to office working times.

The company took second place in the category “national savings” and in total, the bank was able to reduce its energy consumption by around six percent over one year.

The European Energy Trophy was awarded for the first time in 2004. Sponsors include the European Commission and the German federal office of the environment. The results of one year of energy savings are collected and made available to competition participants in the coming year.
