The Difference Between a Carrot and a Kohlrabi

09.01.2009 – Dussmann Service has been responsible for catering at the elementary schools in Jena for eight years. Since September 2008, the branch office has been giving coaching on the subject of vegetables.

Gundula Heinrich could hardly believe her ears. A few months ago, the Dussmann Service site manager was taking part in a parents’ meeting at the Südschule school in Jena and discovered: Pupils who eat with Dussmann Service five times a week can’t tell a carrot from a cucumber or a cucumber from a Kohlrabi. During the weekend at home, convenience food is often used or »we just open a tin« report the parents at the meeting.

When she recovered from the shock, Ms. Heinrich suggested that Dussmann Service cooks visit the schools to give vegetable seminars. She also asked other elementary schools in Jena and found culinary education gaps there too.

Several Dussmann Service cooks toured the schools and, together with the children, prepared meals. The menu included pizza, freshly prepared salads and of course, information concerning the ingredients used and helpful tips for preparing food at home.

Gundula Heinrich and her team have already received requests for the next vegetable seminars.

The Dussmann Service branch office in Thuringia caters to all twelve elementary schools in Jena and a further five in the area. In all, 2,500 meals are prepared each school day at the Jencasino restaurant in Göschwitz industrial park and delivered to schools. At the Jencasino itself, Dussmann Service also serves 600 diners who work at companies located in the industrial park including JENOPTIK AG.
